Still from The Kingston Big Wheel, HD video
Zoetrope (The Kingston Big Wheel) is a video and performance project which responds to formal public displays, dance spectaculars and protest traditions.
Inspired by the iconic motion-sequences of moving image history, the Kingston Big Wheel project developed through participatory movement workshops and performances created with a small local group of young gymnasts and Kingston’s celebrations for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
This project as presented as live performances for Kingston’s Cultural Olympiad launch in Market Square and International Youth Arts Festival 2012 at the Rose Theatre.
Zoetrope (7’7″ HD video) presents a canon of stroboscopic movement thorough dramatic plays of light and shadow which circle the viewer to create a mesmerising physical interpretation of Muybridge’s optical device.
Exhibited as part of Athletes in Motion at Kingston Museum,( home to a significant collection of Muyridge artefacts and his birthplace) , this video was commissioned by the Stanley Picker Gallery for their off-site 2012 ‘No Competition’ programme.
Zoetrope was produced with the kind support of Kingston University students and staff, The Royal Borough of Kingston, Arts Council England and the International Youth Arts Festival with original soundtrack composed by Jorge Queijo.
