Optic: Photographic work 2004 – ongoing
Optic is a new series of photographic prints that use projections of light to animate an emporium of antique chandeliers. These large-scale black and white photograms, created by exposing chandeliers directly onto photosensitive paper, render the physical impressions of light dispersed
by the glass.
Each chandelier fragments light in a different way, casting dazzling explosions of refracted light and distorted shadow. This photographic process of ‘drawing with light’ was pioneered by the early Modernist Moholy-Nagy.
These dramatic images are both a record of this refractive performance and a celebration of the unique qualities of the glass.
Charlie Murphy’s previous photographic work has explored the extremes of photographic recording and its physical and chemical abilities to represent the absolutes of light and darkness. This new work has developed from an enduring fascination with glass, and results from long-term experimentation with light projection.
Also in development is the creation of site-specific tromp l’oiele prints, panoramas and a publication which will fuse the romantic and emotional dimensions of her interest in glass and light.
Public and private funding is sought through which these ideas may be realised.
